Top 10 events happening in May

May is an exciting month in New Hampshire because it’s when many of our favorite education centers, museums and attractions open for the summer months. Memorial Day and summer vacation will be here before we know it!

MAY 4: NEW HAMPSHIRE DAY AT SQUAM LAKES NATURAL SCIENCE CENTER IN HOLDERNESS

New Hampshire residents are invited to spend the day at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center for a deeply discounted rate of $5 per person. Visitors will love the three-quarter mile live animal exhibit trail featuring turtles, frogs, fish, coyote, foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, deer, river otters, black bears, owls and more. Additionally, there will be live animal presentations throughout the day. Regular admission for adults is $20, so this is a 70%+ savings!

MAY 4: HEIFER PARADE AND OPENING DAY IN CANTERBURY

Celebrate springtime at Canterbury Shaker Village by watching as the heifers parade outside and enjoy the pure joy of noshing on green fields for the first time in months. In addition to the adorable cow parade, there will be Maypole dancing, food, outdoor barn dancing, and make-your-own head wreaths throughout the day. Admission is free but there is an opportunity to pay for guided tours.

MAY 5: CHILDREN’S DAY IN PORTSMOUTH

Each year, on the first Sunday of May, Downtown Portsmouth becomes headquarters for children of all ages with the celebration of Children’s Day. The Festival combines family-friendly activities and entertainment, all sponsored, hosted and supported by the downtown merchants, civic organizations and volunteers of the Seacoast. Admission is free.

MAY 11: LIL IGUANA’S FAMILY FUN DAY IN NASHUA

This day of fun focuses on health and fitness, safety, and literacy for children and their families. There’s live, all-day entertainment, costume characters and team mascots, bounces houses, an obstacle course, coloring contest and more. The cost to attend is $1 per person.

MAY 11-12: NH SHEEP AND WOOL FESTIVAL IN DEERFIELD

You don’t have to own sheep or be a farmer to check out this 43rd annual wooly weekend event. The festival features sheep shearing, fiber animals, dog herding demonstrations, sheep dog trials, youth shows and activities, fiber shows, spinning and weaving demonstrations, breed displays, educational programs, and more than 120 vendors. There will be plenty of sheep, alpacas, llamas, goats and angora bunnies waiting for your kids to pet them. Adults are $7 and kids under 12 get in for free.

MAY 11-12 AND 18-19: NH RENAISSANCE FAIRE IN FREMONT

The NH Renaissance Faire is a family-friendly tradition that offers educational, visual, theatrical and historical fun for two weekends each May. From historical knights to fantastical fairies, the NH Renaissance Faire has been bringing together education and fun for the whole family for 15 years.

MAY 12: MOTHER’S DAY

Treat the favorite woman in your life to a day of fun by taking her to a local museum or attraction for free. MAY 18: DANDELION FESTIVAL IN TAMWORTH

You (like just about everyone else) probably think a dandelion is just a weed, but it turns out that the dandelion is just a misunderstood plant! Head to the Remick Country Doctor Farm and Museum in beautiful Tamworth for a fun day of family-friendly activities, crafts and education centered around the incredible, edible dandelion.

MAY 19: KIDS CON NEW ENGLAND IN NASHUA

Kids Con New England is the largest kids comic and children’s book convention in the region. Families can: meet more than 70 artists and creators, hang out with their favorite superheroes, play with pirates and princesses, Jedi training, take part in Pokemon and Minecraft tournaments, enter a costume contest and check out more a dozen creative workshops. MAY 25: LILAC FESTIVAL IN PORTSMOUTH

There is no better place to be than in Portsmouth during the springtime, so grab the kids (or your best friend) and check out this wonderful, free event that takes place at Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion. Tour the grounds, breathe in the aroma of lilacs and even participate in a scavenger hunt.
