Top 10 events happening in August

Celebrate the gentle giants of the north at Colebrook’s annual North Country Moose Festival, happening August 23-24, 2019.

While the weather is still hot and the days are still long, make the most out of August by hitting the road and checking out great events like music and balloon festivals or a local performance in the park.

Here are the top 10 events happening in New Hampshire this month:

August 1-4: Sail Portsmouth: Tall Ships Festival
Waterfront in Portsmouth, NH

The Piscataqua Maritime Commission proudly hosts a Sail Portsmouth event each summer and will bring the US Coast Guard Eagle to New Hampshire in 2019. Activities planned include the Parade of Sail, deck tours, day sails, exhibits and more. Deck tours are free but there is an additional charge for day sails and other activities.

August 2-4: Suncook Valley Rotary Hot Air Balloon Rally
Drake Field in Pittsfield, NH

Families will enjoy midway rides and food, helicopter rides, pancake breakfast, river raft regatta, hot air balloons and fireworks. If you can make it to this event, then definitely go on Saturday and stick around in the evening to check out the Super Night Glow (the balloons will be lit up against the night sky and it’s truly something to see). Admission to this festival is free but there is a cost for amusement rides, tethered balloon rides and food.

August 3-11: 86th Annual League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair
Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury, NH

The fair features contemporary and traditional craft in all media: pottery, hand-blown glass, framed prints, woven baskets, detailed furniture, bowls, hand-dyed silk scarves, and handcrafted jewelry. Master craftsmen demonstrate printmaking, jewelry making, glassblowing, blacksmithing, clay building, weaving and more. Craft workshops for adults, teens, and children offer personalized instruction from a master craftsperson. Admission is $15 for adults and free for children ages 12 and younger.

August 4: Hay Day Festival
The Fells in Newbury, NH

Take a step back in time at the Hay Day Family Festival, an annual celebration of old-fashioned summertime fun held at The Fells estate in Newbury. Planned events include games, music, children’s art projects, scavenger hunt, petting zoo, face painting and food. You can also explore the estate’s nature trails and Fairy Village, and take guided tours of the Main House and gardens.

August 6: National Night Out

Several NH communities (Hooksett, Salem, Northwood, Concord, Rochester, Gilford, Portsmouth, Lincoln, Waterville Valley and MANY more) are hosting a FREE community night out to strengthen and reinforce the relationship between police and local communities. Look for BBQs, music, entertainment and K9 demonstrations.

August 9 and 23: Veggie Hunt
Moulton Farm in Meredith, NH

Throughout the summer, Moulton Farm holds guided “Veggie Hunts” and the event brings children ages 5 to 9, accompanied by a parent or grandparent, into the farm’s fields with a member of the farm’s staff to learn about how each vegetable grows before the veggie hunting begins. Essentially, this Easter-egg-style event gets kids excited about eating their vegetables.

Hampton Beach in Hampton, NH

Jaffrey Airfield-Silver Ranch in Jaffrey, NH

If your family loves fireworks and great music from the Woodstock era, then you won’t want to miss this fireworks spectacular put on by Atlas Pyrovision and the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce. August 18: 17th Annual Fire on the Mountain Chili Fest
Pats Peak Ski Area Henniker, NH
