Online lessons allow students to continue progress

It was a challenge the music teachers at the Real School of Music met early-on.

The music school, which has a facility in Derry in the same building as the Tupelo Music Hall, made the transition from in-person to virtual lessons in 10 hours. The manager of the school created Google Hangout meetings for all the lessons, stayed up all night to build out the remote program, and students were able to continue their studies seamlessly.

We spoke to musician/bass teacher Ed Spargo about how distance learning has been going. Ed has been studying and playing jazz for nearly 40 years, and to have access to his talent and his willingness to share that knowledge is valuable during a time when everyone is fairly well shut off from the world – especially working musicians.

Here’s a look at how the lessons look and work, and a quick interview with Ed and one of his students.
