Our favorite sugar shacks and maple producers
We love the early springtime tradition of trekking out to a maple sugar shack and watching as sap quietly drips into plastic and aluminum buckets from maple trees. If you’re lucky, you can also sneak a peek at the production process and watch as 40 gallons of sap is boiled over a wood fire to yield just one gallon of syrup.
You can find nearly a hundred great sugar shacks across the state but if you’re looking to make an adventure or day out of it, here are some places you should visit during the official New Hampshire Maple Weekend (March 23-24, 2019). You can bet the following sugar shacks will have plenty of activities (and samples!) going on.
Turkey Street Maples
673 Turkey Street
Tamworth, NH 03817
Why you should visit: help the Turkey Street team collect sap from the trees, watch them boil it into delicious syrup and then sample it on freshly made vanilla ice cream. During Maple Weekend Riverstones Bakery and Robert’s Farm will also be on site sampling their maple-inspired treats like cupcakes and cotton candy.
Parker’s Maple Barn
1316 Brookline Road
Mason, NH 03048
Why you should visit: It’s not hard to turn a trip to Parker’s into a half-day adventure. First, you’ll probably want to start off having a hearty breakfast at the restaurant – with delicious pancakes, eggs, waffles and more you definitely won’t leave hungry! And parents, don’t miss the outstanding maple coffee. After your breakfast, head over to the sugar house and watch the magic happen as sap is boiled into syrup. You also won’t want to miss the delightful on-site store that sells maple products as well as toys, puzzles and other goodies.
The Rocks Estate Sugar House
4 Christmas Lane
Bethlehem, NH 03574
Why you should visit: Maybe you’ve visited the Rocks Estate to tag and cut your own Christmas tree but did you know that there’s a sugar house on site too? Called the NH Maple Experience, visitors are invited each March to experience maple sugaring from start to finish. You can drill and tap a tree, take a wagon ride to the sugar house and fill your own mason jar with the sticky, sweet stuff to take home.
Fadden’s General Store and Maple Sugarhouse
109 Main Street
North Woodstock, NH 03262
Why you should visit: Each year the NH Maple Producers crown the best maple syrup in NH and Fadden’s has captured the trophy more than half a dozen times, so why not check out what makes Fadden’s the best of the best? Besides a charming general store and great sugar shack, there’s also a fascinating maple museum filled with maple artifacts from the 200+ years that the Fadden family has been producing maple syrup.
