Get ready to ‘stuff the bus’

United Way of Greater Nashua will be accepting donations of school supplies starting Aug. 1

In preparation for the students of Greater Nashua going back to school, United Way is planning it’s “Stuff the Bus” drive for August 1st as wStuff The Bus Flyer 2020 (2)ell as throughout the following week.

On August 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., United Way volunteers will be on hand at Staples in Nashua, Staples in Amherst, Big Lots in Nashua, and Sam’s Club in Hudson to accept donations of school supplies. Additionally, United Way volunteers will be on hand 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day from Aug. 1 to 7 at the Target Store location at the Pheasant Lane Mall.

At each of these locations, First Student Nashua will have a “Big Yellow School Bus” on hand to accept the collected donations.

Most-needed items this year include everything from pencils, crayons, and markers, to glue sticks, notebooks, and backpacks.

The goal of United Way’s “Stuff the Bus” event is to collect enough supplies to support the important back to school programs of the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter, Nashua Goes Back to School, Milford SHARE Outreach, as well as providing direct support to the many school districts within the Greater Nashua region.

According to United Way President Mike Apfelberg, “Regardless of what format ‘back to school’ takes this year – whether it be remote or in class – kids will need school supplies. In today’s rough economy, it is important that parents preserve as much of their financial resources as possible for necessities including food, clothing, healthcare, and shelter. That makes this year’s event all the more poignant. Each of us knows a teacher who pays for school supplies out of their own pocket. Our goal would be to have a supply of school supplies on hand at each school, especially those with higher percentages of low income families, to alleviate some of that burden on our teachers. We are hoping for a great turnout at this year’s ‘Stuff the Bus’ event.”

Stuff the bus is organized by United Way, staffed by United Way volunteers, and supported by First Student as well as AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire and Mr. Macs Mac ‘n Cheese.
