Play big at Disney's Toy Story Land

Disney immerses guests into the world of ‘Toy Story’

Walt Disney World has officially opened its newest themed land, Toy Story Land, at the Hollywood Studios theme park in Florida.

If it seems there’s a lot of buzz about Buzz lately, it’s no accident.

Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios theme park has turned up the heat this summer by throwing open the doors to Toy Story Land – a new, 11 acre section of the park dedicated to recreating the look, the feel and the heart of the staggeringly-popular Pixar film series.

The new land plays host to two new attractions (and includes a new entrance and queue to the Toy Story Mania attraction,) a new dining area with some appropriately-themed menu items, and a jaw-dropping environment that allows guests to experience it all from a toy’s perspective.

The world is made believable and complete with oversized tinker toys, yo-yos and K'nex creations, seemingly handmade attractions created from the imagination of the film's youthful protagonist, and a fully realized, immersive reality that faithfully recreates the Pixar film, if not the childhood of many visitors. Benches crafted from oversized (and apparently previously-enjoyed) Popsicle sticks, boxes of crayons and Cootie play sets help define the land’s clever boundaries.

Toy Story Land attractions

Alien Swirling Saucers

The first of two new attractions, Alien Swirling Saucers, is based on the tiny, green, three-eyed aliens that Buzz and Woody first encountered at Pizza Planet in the first film. The green denizens of the claw machine (“I have been chosen!”) pilot flying saucers that tow ride vehicles in a winding, swirling ride around the ‘game board.’ For those who have visited Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort in California, think along the lines of Tow Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. For those who haven’t ventured west, imagine an updated, technologically-improved variation on the Mad Tea Party attraction in the Magic Kingdom.

The new Alien Swirling Saucers attraction at Toy Story Land takes guests on a spinning ride through Andy’s play set.

Alien Swirling Saucers by the numbers:

  • A swirl-and-whirl ride.
  • 2-3 passengers per ride vehicle.
  • 22 rocket ships.
  • Height restriction of 32 inches.
  • FastPass+ available.

Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash is a family-friendly, multi-launch roller coaster that takes guests on a fast-paced, twisting, climbing, plunging journey that is woven through much of Toy Story Land itself. It’s a smooth ride, with a thrill level that falls between the Magic Kingdom’s Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain. Tall, banked corners shoot riders into twists, turns and wavy bumps before pausing and then launching again. Riders in the front of the coaster may try to look ahead to see what’s next, but Slinky Dog’s head is rather large, which keeps upcoming thrills a bit of a mystery. Already a wildly popular attraction with long lines (think FastPass+,) the journey elicits gasps and laughs, but few outright thrill screams.

Slinky Dog Dash, a family-friendly roller coaster, is woven throughout the beautifully-themed land.

Keep a close eye on the entire structure, which was apparently built by Andy. Playset boxes, glue, and items from around Andy’s house are included. (Look up upon entering and see Buster’s dog tag and his mom’s watch used as standy and FastPass+ return time readouts.)

Slinky Dog Dash by the numbers:

  • Family-friendly roller coaster (the first at Walt Disney World to feature a mid-ride launch.)
  • Steel track – leading to a very smooth ride.
  • 18 passengers per train.
  • Height restriction of 38 inches.
  • FastPass+ available.

Toy Story Mania

Toy Story Mania, which first opened in 2008, has been folded perfectly into Toy Story Land. A virtual midway where guests can partake in a number of games, this 3-D experience has long been a popular destination for visitors to the Hollywood Studios theme park.
