May is an exciting month in New Hampshire because it's when many of our favorite education centers, museums and attractions open for the summer months. Memorial Day and summer vacation will be here before we know it!

Here are the top 10 events happening in New Hampshire this month:

MAY 6: NEW HAMPSHIRE DAY AT SQUAM LAKES NATURAL SCIENCE CENTER IN HOLDERNESS

New Hampshire residents are invited to spend the day at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center for a deeply discounted rate of $5 per person. Visitors will love the three-quarter mile live animal exhibit trail featuring turtles, frogs, fish, coyote, foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, deer, river otters, black bears, owls and more. Additionally, there will be live animal presentations throughout the day. Regular admission for adults is $19, so this is a 70%+ savings!

MAY 6: HEIFER PARADE IN CANTERBURY

Celebrate springtime at Canterbury Shaker Village by watching as the heifers parade outside and enjoy the pure joy of noshing on green fields for the first time in months. In addition to the adorable cow parade, there will be Maypole dancing, food, outdoor barn dancing, and make-your-own head wreaths throughout the day. Admission is free but there is an opportunity to pay for guided tours.

MAY 6-7: SEACOAST CAT CLUB'S ANNUAL CAT SHOW IN CONCORD

What's better than looking at cute cat videos on your phone? Seeing them - and petting them - in person! Head to the Everett Arena in Concord and watch as cats compete in obstacle courses and vie for the crown and title of best in show. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children and this event promises to be a puuurfect way to spend time with your kids.

MAY 6: AEROSPACEFEST IN CONCORD

Take your kids to infinity and beyond! Don't miss this full day of science and aerospace programming including four planetarium shows, telescope demos from the NH Astronomical Society and a keynote speed from astronaut and Portsmouth native Rick Searfoss. Kids can also Fly aviation simulators and paper airplanes with the NH Bureau of Aeronautics and Aviation Museum of NH or drive a robot with the team from FIRST Robotics. Cost is $15 for adults, $13 for students, $10 for kids, free for members and under 3.

MAY 7: CHILDREN'S DAY IN PORTSMOUTH

Each year on the first Sunday of May, Downtown Portsmouth becomes headquarters for children of all ages with the celebration of Children's Day. The Festival combines family-friendly activities and entertainment, all sponsored, hosted and supported by the downtown merchants, civic organizations and volunteers of the Seacoast. Admission is free.

MAY 12-14: NATIONAL PUBLIC GARDENS DAY AT THE FELLS IN NEWBURY

Visit the beautiful gardens and outdoor scupltures at The Fells for free this weekend and treat mom to a Mother's Day picnic in the gardens.

MAY 14: MOTHER'S DAY

Treat the favorite woman in your life to a day of fun by taking her to a local museum or attraction for free. Several NH attractions are offering free or discounted admission for moms, so if you're looking for a unique gift idea then check out our list. Destinations include: Children's Museum of NH, Conway Scenic Railroad, Canobie Lake Park, Stone Zoo and Lost River Gorge.

MAY 13-14: NH SHEEP AND WOOL FESTIVAL IN DEERFIELD

You don't have to own sheep or be a farmer to check out this 41st annual wooly weekend event. The festival features sheep shearing, fiber animals, dog herding demonstrations, sheep dog trials, youth shows and activities, fiber shows, spinning and weaving demonstrations, breed displays, educational programs, and more than 120 vendors. There will be plenty of sheep, alpacas, llamas, goats and angora bunnies waiting for your kids to pet them. Kids under 12 get in for free.

MAY 13-14 AND 20-21: NH RENAISSANCE FAIRE IN KINGSTON

The NH Renaissance Faire is a family-friendly tradition that offers educational, visual, theatrical and historical fun in the town of Kingston, NH for two weekends each May. From historical knights to fantastical fairies, the NH Renaissance Faire has been bringing together education and fun for the whole family for 13 years.

MAY 20: LIL IGUANA'S FAMILY FUN DAY IN NASHUA

This day of fun focuses on health and fitness, safety, and literacy for children and their families. There's live, all-day entertainment, costume characters and team mascots, bounces houses, an obstacle course, coloring contest and more. The cost to attend is $1 per person.
