Girls at Work, Inc. (GAW) empowers girls with the tools to overcome adversity and build confidence to face current and future life challenges.
Our vision is a world where every girl feels confident and capable.
Only a handful of the girls we meet have had the opportunity to learn how to use power tools safely. We pride ourselves in providing girls with a safe and supportive environment to step out of their comfort zone and to build with other girls. Not only do they discover how capable they are, they also discover how exciting it is to work as part of a team toward a common goal.
EMPOWERING GIRLS ONE WOODWORKING PROJECT AT A TIME
When the staff of Girls at Work, Inc. teach woodworking skills and how to safely use power tools, the results are uplifting and life-changing. Our little builders are fierce and powerful! No experience required!
Everyday is different at our camp! One thing is certain, we build, build, build!! Because that is what our girls want to do in their shop! Our garden is tended through the summer by the girls first planting, building trellis, pruning, and then picking the flowers and vegetables. We also have strong women in their careers come in from time to time to provide hands on experiences from electronics, 3D printing, and other STEM careers. (We also have two mascot bunnies that visit the shop for down time.)
Weeks of camp offered to the public for $220. per week, for girls ages 9-14. All proceeds help support our reach into inner-city schools with our after school and summer camp. Space is limited. Sign up online: Charge & Checks accepted.

New builders start with smaller builds like peg boards, benches, etc. Experienced builders start building larger projects like book cases, Adirondack chairs, etc.
There is room to make your build unique to you. As you build you can ask about changes you might want to add or a design idea you'd like to try. The instructor is always open to discussion.
Elaine is our founder and worked construction for years. She will be your main instructor.
ABSOLUTELY! You can paint or stain your work at home. Use your builds in your home or give them as gifts. They are yours.
We sometimes build picnic tables and donate them to area non-profits. It gives our girls a feeling of pride as they know how much their work is appreciated.
We have work stations stocked with tools that are in your workshop. It is your space.
We provide you with protective glasses, dust masks, and earplugs. You will learn how to use the tools in a safe way.
Uhm... YES!! This is nothing like any camp you've ever been to. You will feel stronger, knowing that you have the power to build!
Boys in almost all camp and scout groups have these opportunities. We want to give girls a safe space to try building without feeling societies' pressures of "girls can't do that".
